RUO Policy
Last updated: May 16, 2026 · PeptaCo LLC
Summary: Every product PeptaCo LLC sells is designated Research Use Only (RUO). RUO products are not for diagnostic, therapeutic, veterinary, or human use. Purchase of any product on this site constitutes acceptance of this policy.
1. RUO Definition
"RUO" is an abbreviation for Research Use Only. It is a designation used primarily by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for products, often in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) components like reagents or instruments, that are in the laboratory research phase of development and are not intended for clinical diagnostic use.
In the context of peptides and research compounds, RUO designates materials that have been synthesized and characterized for use in controlled laboratory environments and have not been evaluated or approved for any application in humans or animals.
2. Research Use Only Explained
- Intended Purpose: RUO products are intended solely for basic research, pharmaceutical research, or the development of new tests. They are not for diagnosing a disease or condition in a patient and are not for any form of clinical use.
- Regulatory Exemption: Products labeled "For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures" are exempt from most of the FDA's regulatory requirements for medical devices, such as premarket approval / clearance and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This exemption makes them more cost-effective for research purposes but also means they have not been validated for any clinical end use.
- Labeling Requirement: The prominent RUO labeling serves as a critical warning to prevent use in patient testing. Mislabeling products as RUO when they are actually intended for clinical use is illegal and can lead to FDA enforcement actions, including warning letters and seizure.
- FDA Oversight: The FDA determines a product's intended use based on the "totality of the circumstances," including labeling, advertising, and sales practices. Selling RUO products to clinical labs that the manufacturer knows will use them for diagnostic purposes can be considered evidence of an improper intended use.
3. The Role of the FTC
The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has overlapping jurisdiction with the FDA regarding the advertising and promotion of health-related products. The FTC ensures that all marketing claims for products, including those that might be related to research or diagnostics, are truthful, non-misleading, and supported by appropriate science.
While the FDA focuses on the safety and effectiveness of the diagnostic products themselves, the FTC focuses on the accuracy of the advertising claims made to consumers and potential buyers. The agencies work together to regulate product promotion compliance.
4. How PeptaCo LLC Applies RUO
Every compound listed on this website is sold as Research Use Only. We apply this designation through:
- Labeling. Every vial and outer package is labeled "For Research Use Only. Not for human consumption."
- Order acknowledgement. At checkout, every purchaser must affirm — and our system records, with a timestamp and policy version — that they are 21 or older, that the purchase is for research use only and not for human consumption, and that they accept these policies, before the order is accepted.
- Marketing. Product descriptions, research notes, and the COA Library describe characterization data only. We do not make therapeutic, diagnostic, dosing, or efficacy claims for any compound.
- Compliance reviews. Site copy and email campaigns are reviewed against FDA and FTC guidance before publication.
5. Purchaser Obligations
By placing an order, you represent that you will use the compounds exclusively for lawful, in-vitro scientific research. Specifically, you agree that you will not:
- Administer, inject, or otherwise introduce any compound into a human or animal body
- Use any compound to diagnose, treat, prevent, mitigate, or cure any disease or condition
- Resell, repackage, or distribute the compounds for any use other than qualified in-vitro research
- Misrepresent the compounds as therapeutic agents, dietary supplements, or clinical-grade reagents
Sole responsibility for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws — including the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Controlled Substances Act where relevant, and FTC advertising rules — rests with the purchaser.
6. Limitations of RUO Products
Because RUO products are exempt from most FDA premarket requirements, purchasers should be aware that:
- The compounds have not been evaluated for safety, purity, or efficacy in humans or animals
- Lot-to-lot variability is possible and is the reason every shipment is accompanied by a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis
- No representation is made that the compounds are sterile, pyrogen-free, or otherwise suitable for any clinical or therapeutic context
- Storage, handling, and disposal must follow standard laboratory practices and any applicable institutional protocols
7. Enforcement
PeptaCo LLC reserves the right to refuse or cancel any order, suspend or terminate any account, and report misuse to relevant authorities where credible evidence exists that compounds are being used outside of RUO scope. Repeated or egregious violations will result in a permanent ban from future purchases.
